My Favorite Podcasts

As developers we are expected to be always up-to-date, which is a very exhausting task. Some developers follow RSS feeds, subscribe to newsletters, or follow twitter accounts. I used to do all that, guilty as charged.

Podcasts are audio or video recorded/streamed episodes about a topic where hosts and sometimes guests discuss that topic. Listeners to stream can contribute too.

I started listening to podcasts a couple of months ago and immediately felt the difference. I now have less news to read as I listen more, and I only invest time in reading what I really want to focus on, be it a technical article or a deep dive into a new vulnerability. I can also listen at faster speeds like 1.5x and 2x, allowing me to follow more in less time.

Regularly, I follow topics like web development, PHP, Laravel, security, open source, Linux, Raspberry Pi, and maker movement. That reflected on my choices of podcasts as well, so here are my current favorite podcasts.

Web Development and PHP

PHP Town Hall

A podcast about web development using PHP and everything around it, providing technical news and discussions in a pleasant way.

/dev/hell

An uncensored podcast discussing web development and all things related, this podcast to the rest of the podcasts is like Deadpool to super heroes, don’t miss it! 😄

Laravel Framework

Laravel News Podcast

A podcast from the creators of the Laravel News website, bringing you the latest about Laravel along with useful tips and tricks in a friendly format with little side chit-chat.

The Laravel Podcast

A podcast about Laravel and PHP that is more geared towards discussions along with news. Regular guests include Taylor Otwell (the creator of Laravel) and Jeffrey Way (the creator of Laracasts), who add a lot of value to the podcast.

Linux & Open Source

LINUX Unplugged

A podcast that is more like an open discussion and different opinions that is exactly as they describe it: “no prep, no limits, and tons of opinion. An open show powered by community LINUX Unplugged takes the best attributes of open collaboration and focuses them into a weekly lifestyle show about Linux”.

Linux Action Show

The world’s #1 Linux podcast. A weekly show that covers the best in the open source and Linux world. Get a solid dose of Linux, gadgets, how-to, reviews, and news every week.

Let me know what do you think of these podcasts and if you have other recommendations to share! 😄
